Measures: 64 x 44 cm
Technique: Oil on canvas
Depository: Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, Vienna
In 1894 Klimt was assigned to portrait an artist of the Burgtheater. The actor had to be depicted in one of his stage roles. Klimt chose Josef Lewinsky as Don Carlos in Goethe’s Clavigo. In 1858 Lewinsky made his debut in the play Die Räuber from Friedrich Schiller. In the same year he was on stage as Don Carlos for the first time with great success. 36 years later he still performed as Don Carlos and had become an institution at the Burgtheater. The frame of the portrait is transferred on the canvas showing the Allegory of Theater. Lewinsky stands very upright in the upper part of the middle field of the painting. Stylistically Klimt again is strongly influenced by James Whistler.
